What is BYOB?
BYOB is a series of one-night-exhibitions curated by different people around the world. The idea is simple: Find a place, invite many artists, ask them to bring their projectors.
BYOB is a way of making a huge show with zero budget. It is also an exploration of the medium of projection.
Who created BYOB?
BYOB is an idea by Rafaël Rozendaal. The first edition of BYOB was initiated by Anne de Vries & Rafael Rozendaal in Berlin.
This website is designed by Katja Novitskova.
What does BYOB mean?
BYOB is an acronym for “Bring Your Own Beamer”. In Europe projectors are often referred to as “beamers”.
I want to organize a BYOB myself, is that OK?
Yes! BYOB is an open idea, and the more it happens the better. Send me an email with the details of your event (title, url, date, location, 200x200px thumbnail) and I will post it on the BYOB website. It would be appreciated if you credit me (Rafaël Rozendaal) as the inventor of BYOB and a link to www.byobworldwide.com
How many artists should I invite to my BYOB?
The more the better.
Can anyone with a projector just walk in and join the exhibition?
This is up to you. You can invite a certain number of artists, or leave it completely open. This could be great, but you might overload your electric system.
Any practical tips?
Electricity is very important. It is good to divide the equipment over as many different outlets as possible. It is also a good idea to think of where to go afterwards, when everyone packs up their gear, it’s nice to think of a destination to celebrate together.
Why BYOB?
BYOB is a celebration of the new world we live in and a glimpse of what computing could look like in the future. Today the internet is confined to screens. Tomorrow information will surround us, composing our surfaces, defining our spaces, enmeshing itself with the ether. A moving image is never an object, and when it is coupled with the increased flexibility of portable projection, the realm of experience quickly expands.
Is BYOB only for internet artists?
No! BYOB is for anyone who is interested in moving light, sound and performance. Projection can mean many things. Projections are very flexible and create a freedom to react to each others works, move things around, and create a dynamic collaborative experience. Hopefully there will be many different kinds of BYOB’s.
Can you post the documentation of my BYOB?
If you have photos and videos from your BYOB (500 px width), post them on your Tumblr, and I will reblog them on www.byobworldwide.com
Are there any rules?
BYOB should be easy, fun & no stress.
Rafaël Rozendaal, 2010
